Do employers really care someone's major if he or she can do the job?

I decided that I want to get my masters degree. I have a BA in English and didn't just want to keep down that route. However, I was amazed in my research about which majors one would think were very useful, but really aren't. For example, I took a lot of developmental psych courses during my undergrad years because I loved them. I looked into psychology MS and MA degrees and was shocked that very few of them really lead you to a solid career path. A few of them it seemed (much like English)pretty much led you to a PhD, then to teaching.
